Concrete retaining walls in Elko NV - holds your slope and lets water drain away
Bank slumping onto the yard, or an old wall leaning out? We build poured walls with drainage behind them so the dirt stays put.

When does a sloped yard in Elko need a concrete retaining wall?
A concrete retaining wall holds back a bank of soil and stands up to the sideways push that dirt puts on it, so in Elko it's how you turn a slope that keeps sliding into a yard, driveway edge or patio that stays put.
Most folks call me when dirt keeps washing onto the driveway or patio, a bank behind the house is creeping, or an old wall has started to lean and crack. The price mostly comes down to the wall's height and length, whether you need a reinforced structural wall or a simpler one will hold, and how much digging and drainage the site takes. The schedule turns on the weather and on the wall gaining strength before the dirt goes back behind it. If the slope also needs a way up it, we can plan concrete steps alongside the wall, and the estimate I write up gives you your own figure.
How we build concrete retaining walls
Water building up behind a wall is what I worry about most, so drainage is part of every wall we plan from the first sketch instead of something tacked on at the end. Before that, I'll tell you honestly whether you need a poured structural wall at all, because a dry-laid wall of stacked, open-joint stone or block costs a lot less and does the job on some slopes. If poured concrete is the right call, we choose between a gravity wall, which stays put through its own weight and the soil it holds with little or no steel, and a cantilever wall, reinforced concrete on a footing where the soil sitting on the footing's back part, the heel, does most of the holding. Then our crew digs and forms the footing, sets the rebar, the steel that keeps the concrete from pulling apart, pours the wall and builds the drainage in behind it before the soil goes back.
A wall is often what makes room for the next project. Cutting into a hillside can give you a level spot for a shop or garage, and the wall holds the cut while we handle the concrete floor installation. Stepping a backyard down with a wall is also a common way to get flat ground for concrete pool decks that don't have a hill pressing on one side.
Building a retaining wall and fence in Elko
In Elko, the permit question usually comes up when you want a fence on top. The City of Elko's fence permit rules require a building permit for a fence supported by a retaining wall once the two reach a height the city sets, measured from the bottom of the wall's footing to the top of the fence, so check the exact figure with the city if a fence is in your plans. That list names fences, not walls on their own, so it doesn't settle whether a plain wall needs a permit, and any building in the city has to meet the city's building code either way. We look into it during the estimate, pull the permit ourselves when the job calls for one and keep you posted with the city. It's also fair to ask any Nevada contractor whether your job fits their monetary limit, which is the largest contract the state lets them take on for one site and one client.
Most of the walls we're asked about around Elko and out in Spring Creek hold back a cut behind a house or along a driveway, or turn a sloped yard into ground you can use. Plenty of them run close to a property line, so we pin down where the line is before we plan the footing.
How a retaining wall job works
Call or send the form
Tell us roughly how long and tall the wall needs to be, and send a few photos if you have them. We'll get back to you to set a time for me to come out.
I walk the site with you
I ask how you'll use the ground above and below the wall and look at where the water runs now. The written estimate lays out the wall type, the drainage behind it and the price, so you can compare it with any other bid line by line.
We sort permits and timing
Once you're ready, we take care of the permit side with the city and set a pour date that suits the weather. You'll know the plan before anyone starts digging.
We build it and explain care
I'm on site with our crew while the work gets done, from the footing to the backfill. When we wrap up, I'll walk you through how to care for the new wall.

Questions before you build a retaining wall
What does a concrete retaining wall cost in Nevada?
Retaining wall construction in Nevada usually costs about $36 to $40 per square foot. That's the going rate around the state, not our price, and your wall's size and how much it holds back are what move it. I'll measure and write up your number at the estimate.
What causes a retaining wall to fail?
Most retaining walls fail because water or soil moisture builds up behind them, so every wall needs a way for that water to get out. The usual answer is gravel backfill or a drainage blanket with a drain pipe, and structural walls also need weep holes, openings that let water drain through the wall. Researchers have found those holes often clog from poor backfill, plants, critters or trash, so keeping them clear is the one chore a wall really asks of you.
Can you pour a concrete retaining wall in cold weather in Elko?
Yes, concrete poured in cold weather still gains enough strength when it's properly placed and protected. Cold weather for concrete means the air falls to 40°F or is expected to drop below it while the fresh concrete needs shielding, and the colder it gets the more protection it needs. We pick the pour date with that in mind.
How long does a new retaining wall take before it can be backfilled?
Backfill, the soil placed behind the wall, goes in once the wall has gained enough strength or has been braced, so it's about the wall being ready, not a set day on the calendar. Wall-building guidance also says heavy machines should stay back from the top of the wall by a distance equal to the wall's height while the backfill goes in.
How do you build a retaining wall close to a property line?
A cantilever wall can sit close to the line by using a footing on just one side, either the heel under the soil behind it or the toe out front, so the footing doesn't cross onto the neighbor's property. That's why I ask where your line runs before we plan anything.
What should a retaining wall footing sit on?
A retaining wall's footing should rest on firm, undisturbed soil or well-compacted fill, and where the ground freezes, its bottom goes below the frost line, the depth the ground freezes to. Loose dirt raked level under a footing settles and takes the wall with it, so I check what's down there before we pour.
Why Elko homeowners call Elko Concrete for retaining walls
I write every estimate myself
I come out to look at every job and write the estimate myself, and I'm on site with our crew while the wall goes up. The person who planned your drainage is the one watching it go in.
Years spent fixing failed concrete
Before we opened in 2023, I spent years doing upkeep for a property management company, patching cracked walks, broken steps and sunken slabs. That's where I learned that the parts you can't see, what's under the concrete and where the water goes, decide how long it lasts.
Fully licensed and insured contractor
We're fully licensed and insured. The Nevada State Contractors Board lists concrete contracting as its own specialty field, so it's a fair thing to ask any contractor about before they start digging.
On a retaining wall, the drainage you never see matters more than the face you do. When you're ready, get in touch and I'll come out and take a look.
Work that often goes with a retaining wall
Concrete floor installation
If you're cutting into a hillside for a shop or garage, a new concrete floor gives you solid, level ground while the wall holds the cut behind it.
Concrete pool decks
A wall can step a backyard down to flat ground, so a new pool deck sits level instead of fighting a hillside that pushes and drains toward it.
